Conversational Chemistry

Have you ever had a phone conversation with someone for the first time, and the timing is just completely off? You start talking, and they've started talking at the same time. Then you stop to let them speak, but they've stopped to let you speak. Then you both start talking at the same time again. Then you stop but they keep going, so you've completely missed the first half of whatever they were saying. You both do that awkward, nervous laugh. Then there's an uncomfortable silence. Then you both start talking at the same time again. Christ!

It's not at all the case that you or the other person is especially long-winded or socially awkward. It's just that there is zero conversational chemistry there. You know what I mean?

I had that happen just six weeks ago. It was the rare awkward moment for me. The guy called me in response to a job search inquiry (I ended up getting it, and am moving to Cali in June). It was the first time we'd spoken, and it happened like six times in 5 minutes that we'd both start talking at the same time, stop, then keep going simultaneously until one of us trailed off.

Ok, maybe, just maybe I can wait until after July 2nd to move.

Great post.

You may be the South Asian, female Larry David.

This seems to be the verbal version of walking into someone on the street and then having to go right, then laugh, then left, then laugh, then right, then get frustrated.

As for the above responder, I don't think anyone cared to know about the result of your job search, but thanks for casually inserting it in there!
